Self proclaimed design and construction nerd, with an obsession for learning more every day. As a 3rd generation carpenter with an architecture degree, my respect for the abilities of those in the construction industry cannot be understated. To design the unbuildable is to meet ultimate failure; but to push the boundaries of materials and knowledge is a noble pursuit, when undertaken with consideration for all factors. Just because it can be built, doesn't mean it should.
Design Platypus was started to provide a vehicle to explore additional opportunities in design & construction which aren't possible in a conventional firm.
Why, "Design Platypus," well...if you've worked with me; you'll understand. I don't mind being different and feel fortunate to have found my passion in my career.

Tools
Design is a ubiquitous element of the human experience, as such, there are different methods of understanding such a wide array of conditions. As with most professionals today, the majority of production work is done in Revit, but there are an exceptional number of tools which are leveraged, should the conditions require.
Locations
Currently based out of Phoenix, AZ, I maintain a foothold in my home state of Iowa. Suffice to say that these are not limiting factors for design; have laptop, will travel.
Capabilities
It has been my mission in life to be continuously growing and evolving as a design professional. In order to undertake such and approach, certain concessions have had to be made as opposed to a traditional Architectural career path.
A perennial question that must be addressed is, "What kind of architecture do you specialize in?" The answer being, "The next one." By undertaking a wide variety of projects in different sectors, vertical markets, and industries, patterns emerge regarding the human experience, operations, and construction techniques; which would not be evident to anyone specializing in any one sector. This perspective of seeing the forest, rather than studying a specific tree, enables a process of sourcing unique solutions which may be common place in one typology and transplanting it to a new application.
If the goal is to find a designer who knows everything about corporate offices, there are many options of exceptionally qualified firms/individuals who will provide you with the most in depth and precise execution of that model. If the goal is to challenge the concept of what an office can be, to take a step back and comprehend the unique parallels between restaurants, recreation centers, schools, churches, airports, libraries, etc... then perhaps Design Platypus is what you're looking for.

Collaboration
One does not exist in a vacuum. 20+ years working in design & construction has resulted in a great many relationships which span the spectrum. No one person has all the answers and one thing that a truly competent designer must be willing to admit is when assistance is needed.
The majority of work is better accomplished in a team, even more so when the collaborations span years, even decades. Whether DP is being asked to join a team or assemble one, it's an open dialog to provide the best possible scenario for success. The only condition is that the focus be on the results provided in the end.
